You're Being Stalked or Abused?
Stalking is defined as “a repeated course of conduct intended for no lawful purpose.” If you’re being stalked, you know that doesn’t come close to describing it. You’re looking over your shoulder, keeping an eye on your rear view mirror, drawing your shades long before dark. Someone is hanging around after you’ve asked them to stay away from you, and you’re scared. That’s just what they intended to do.
Your first step should be to contact the police. The police can look at a charge of harassment, and the stalker may or may not be charged. We urge you to take steps to protect yourself before you are harmed physically.
You can also take out a Protection From Abuse order or PFA. The order notifies the person that he or she may not come within 200 feet of you, and, if they do, they can be arrested. Women in Crisis can help walk you through the procedure and can accompany you to the Courthouse where you will fill out a petition. The petition allows you to present your cast to a Judge without the accused being present. At that time, you will be granted a temporary protective order. Ten days later, a hearing will be held at which you will most likely be granted the PFA.
